What is YOGA – NIDRA?
Yoga Nidra or Yogic Sleep!! Have you heard of this earlier? Yogic Sleep is a concept of pure sleep without any stress. It is intended to induce full body relaxation and state of awareness. Normally a person sleeps in night and has no sound sleep but dreamy. This way he/she doesn’t feel active, fresh and rejuvenated. One feels physically and mentally tired and unstable. Those who face such problems, Yoga Nidra is very helpful. By practicing yoga nidra one feels relaxed and physically, mentally fit.
Method of Practicing Yoga – Nidra
Procedure
Lie on the back in shavasana posture with eyes close. Lie in such a way that the spine is aligned and feet and arms are at comfortable distance to the sides. Try to concentrate on the breath. Move your attention to the right foot toes one by one. Then sole, ankle and keep attention there for a few seconds while relaxing foot. Gently move attention upto the right knee, right thigh and hip again for a couple of seconds. Be aware of whole right leg. Repeat this process for the left leg. Take attention to all parts of the body such as chest, right shoulder, right arm and right hand, umbilical area, genital area followed by the left shoulder, left arm, left hand and fingers, throat, face and top of the head. Similarly move the attention to heart, it’s blood vessels, valves and hear the heart and lungs sound carefully.
Take a deep breath in, observe the sensations in the body and relax in this still state for a few minutes. Switch on light, instrumental music or some soothing chants before starting yoga nidra. Now slowly become aware of your body and surroundings, turn to left side and keep lying down for a few more minutes. Take your time and slowly sit up and rub both the hands with each other and according to the comfort level, slowly put them on eyes and open gradually.
