What are kidney stones?

Nephrolithiasis is the medical term for kidney stones. These are hard lumps of minerals like calcium, acids and salts which give you trouble. These are easily treated if recognized on time and followed by balanced diet and home remedies.

What are the effective home remedies for kidney stones?

Lemon juice- lemon juice is wonderful here. 1 of lemon juice with half teaspoon olive oil in a glass of plain water, two times daily gives excellent results. Citric acid present in lemon deals with calcium. Anti-oxidants keeps body alkaline and free from any toxin.

 

Basil juice – Commonly known as tulsi in India is another efficient home cure for recurrent kidney stones. Tulis juice works like a tonic that manages urinary tract infections and clears the channels.

 

Coriander juice – 20 ml juice of fresh coriander leaves can be mixed with 1 glass of plain water to drink. This acts as a diuretic and helps to remove stones effectively.

 

Horse gram – Called as kullathi that is consumed in Indian kitchens in form of daal and soup. This helps to break down stone and flush easily out. You can prepare soup out of it and add lemon juice with pinch of black pepper for better results.

 

Corn silk – Corn silk decoction is another effective way to get rid of stones. One can boil some of corn silk in 2 cups of water to make decoction. Drink this daily, twice for couple of days until stones are taken out. These can be dried and stored in a container and can be consumed as corn silk tea later to prevent kidney stones. 

Are there effective herbs for the same?

Yes Ayurveda has wonderful herbs to remove kidney stones and results can be seen with in few days. Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), kaasni (Cichorium intybus), Varun (Crataeva nurvala, Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), Bhumiamla (Phyllanthus niruri), Pashanbhed (Bergenia ligulata) are amazing to deal with them. They can be tried in powdered or decoction form or can be chosen in supplement form for easy convenience. Use regularly for few days or months as required.

 

What are the tips to prevent kidney stones?

·         Stay hydrated! Yes water is most important to flush out kidney stones and other toxins so drink plenty of water throughout the day. 10 to 12 glasses are enough to keep kidney stones away.

·         Include coconut water and other fruit juices like pomegranate juice, lemon juice. Wheat grass juice, tulsi juice etc. are equally effective.

·         Limit oxalate rich foods, as mentioned above in list.

·         Take very less salt

·         Restrict non veg intake

·         Include fibre in your diet

·         Practice some yoga and breathing exercises

·         Maintain a healthy weight

·         Stay active
